I'm sure everyone is familiar with John Lennon's wonderfiul anthem for peace "Imagine". In it there's a lyric about religion that's upset a lot of people.
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us, only sky
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion, too...
Sadly—as John Lennon stated—too often religion zealotry has separated people and caused violence and wars.
I have been singing in church choirs since Junior High and yes even put on a robe every Sunday but I am not necessarily deeply religious. To me there's a huge difference between religion and spirituality. Spirituality is very personal, a belief in something greater than oneself, a connection to a deeper reality.
The concept of “God” has many flavors to people. Some folks need a weekly visit to monumental Gothic edifice to believe - organized religion is tailor made for them. On a more personal level, Ralph Waldo Emerson passionately believed in experiencing God through nature: "He is within each one of us and can be sought and nurtured through closer contact with nature." 1
