Penance and Payback

darkness awaits...

Seeking a way to move on
Time tells me something is wrong
Oh why must I choose... to always lose?
Running from truth far too long.

Gazing into the dark
Memories so vivid and stark
Why was it so? How far did it go?
To death's doorstep now I am marked.

Penance and payback, justice is served
Fated to get just what I deserve...

With bloodstains etched in my mind
Solace is so hard to find
I can no longer run from what I have done
Only darkness awaits me... its time.

Penance
- voluntary self-punishment inflicted as an outward expression of repentance for having done wrong

Solace
- comfort or consolation in a time of distress or sadness

About the Lyrics
Dark and foreboding, this tune cryptically tells the story of a hardened criminal on death row. [Yeah I know... what a morbid theme for a song but creative inspiration is a strange thing - this tune just "came to me" while noodling on the electric piano... ]

About the Music
Fretless bass, electric piano and frame drums set the mood. Of course for the brief solo, the perfect instrument for this tune was trombone:

"The sound of trombones has long been thought especially solemn, noble and had an association with death and the afterlife. The instrument was a symbol of divine presence, the voice of the angels and instrument of judgment." Source
