"Snowflakes are one of nature's most fragile things, but just look what they can do when they stick together."
- Vesta M. Kelly
"In the bleak midwinter
Frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron,
Water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow,
Snow on snow,
In the bleak midwinter"
- Christina Rossetti
Late January 2026 - Across the U.S,. the country has been enveloped in massive snowstorms. It seemed an opportune moment to put together a video of fresh snowfalls that I have documented over the years at various parks I've biked and/or hiked.
What's unique about this recording is the medley is played on the baritone horn (euphonium) - not the trombone. Being a "shrimp" as I kid (photo), I was relegated to the baritone/euphonium rather than the trombone for a few years since I couldn't reach all the slide positions. Luckily I remember all the valve combinations and picked up a funky old baritone horn (euphonium) in a pawn shop while living in self-inflicted poverty ages ago on Manhattan's Upper West Side.
The euphonium has a more mellow darker sound than the trombone and I think it works well in the context of this piece.
