America of course has its own monstrous history of brutality and murder from the genocide of Native Americans to the deeply entrenched role of slavery and prejudice in our society. A few strong-willed determined leaders--against formidable odds--have stood up to these evils and fought valiantly for equality.

Frederick Douglass

Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela (1918 – 2013) was a South African anti-apartheid activist and statesman who was the first president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.
