Red Cloud

Red Cloud's Revenge

Native American Bass Flute

The title referes to Red Cloud—a Lakota warrior who led a successful war against the United States (the war was named after him!) and continued his defiance against the government until his dying days.

This tune features the Native American bass flute in D minor (see photo- opens in new tab). The music is an interesting amalgamation of jazz, funk and rock and traditional Native American percussion. Its more energetic and bluesy than many of my other Native American influenced tunes... like Red Cloud, unique and defiant.

Who was Red Cloud?
Red Cloud was one of the most capable American Indian opponents that the United States Army faced in its mission to occupy the western territories, leading a successful campaign in 1866–68 known as Red Cloud's War over control of northeastern Wyoming and southern Montana. Outliving all the other major Lakota leaders of the Indian Wars, Red Cloud died on Pine Ridge Reservation in 1909 at the age of 87.

Red Cloud was the most photographed American Indian of the nineteenth century and has been honored by the United States Postal Service with a 10¢ Great Americans series postage stamp.

"They made us many promises, more than I can remember. But they kept but one—They promised to take our land... and they took it."- Chief Red Cloud, Sioux
