deep water

Deep Water

Jude Johnstone

A mackerel sky and a murder of crows
Are takin' in the scene
Waiting for the truth to blow us both
To smithereens
We could hang on 'til it rains
But either way it seems
Oh this is deep water.

We've got to face the darkness now
Before we can see the light
We've given it all that we have
And still it isn't right
And you must admit
Though we're still holding on tonight
Oh this is deep water
This is deep water.

(Solos)

You can know somebody
Like you think you know yourself
Sail along the surface
Still believing all is well
Wake up underneath the waves
Pounded by the swell
Oh this is deep water.
Yeah this is deep water
Oh this is deep water.

Curious about a "mackerel sky"?

Music

This such a great song—I fell in love with it the first time I heard it! What's even more interesting is although it could be interpreted as a cautionary love song, it can also have so many more deeper universal meanings: (1) anyone you've known who may have turned on you; (2) the state of our culture; (3) the current condition of our messed up planet, the list goes on and on.

I have rearranged it using Native American frame drums and an array of "power" synths to give it more of hard-edged rock vibe. Spacey electric trombone and a Native American double flute round out the arrangement.
